Denali National Park and Preserve
- H.R. 4677
The State of Alaska analyzed snowmobile use on 34.3
million acres of federal and state lands in Southcentral
Alaska and concluded that over 95% of those lands,
32.8 million acres, are currently available for snowmobile
use. Source: AK Dept. of Natural Resources, 1996.
At over 6 million acres, Denali National Park and
Preserve currently has 2.1 million acres of designated
Wilderness. From the time the area was first set aside in
1917, snowmobiles were never used legally in Denali's
designated Wilderness, and ANILCA did nothing to
change that. Both S.2589 and H.R.4677 would revoke the Park Service regulations that maintain this historic closure of the Denali National Park Wilderness to snowmobiles.
