Alaska Rainforest Protection Proposal for the Tongass National Forest

This map shows areas designated as wilderness and protected wildlands (LUD II) under the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA) of 1980, and the Tongass Timber Reform Act (TTRA) of 1990. Proposed protections of roadless wildlands, restoration areas and community use areas also are shown. As part of this proposal, areas designated as LUD II will be included as conservation system units (CSU) under ANILCA, and the Mansfield Peninsula on Admiralty Island will be designated as a National Monument. In addition, Kadashan River, Trap Bay and Berners Bay, designated LUD II under TTRA, will receive wilderness status. Within proposed protected areas, we have identified critical transportation links of communities to existing road systems, and designated them as access corridors.

Roadless areas on this map were identified based on a Roadless Inventory database in the 1997 Tongass Land Management Plan Revision. We included roads constructed or approved under the Shamrock and Bohemia Mountain timber sales on Kupreanof Island, the King George timber sale on Etolin Island, the citizen's alternative to the Control Lake timber sale on Prince of Wales Island, and the Kelp Bay and APC 8690 plan as amended under the AWRTA settlement. In addition, areas associated with non-system roads and beach logging activity, generally dating from the 1960's and before, were considered roadless in our analyses.
